One example of this is Trueplay, a VERY useful technology that makes where you place your speaker a little problem. Because of this, Sonos can ship updates over the internet to improve the speakers performance through software. The SUB also features a full-blown Linux computer inside that is the core of the user experience. This removed cabinet rattle and buzz due to the unit itself not moving, and stops the SUB from potentially sliding around at high volumes. This means that the force of the sub moving right will be cancelled by the force of the other sub moving left. The SUB features two Class-D amps to power the opposing woofers that play in the same phase. Sure, you can get better SUBs for cheaper but Sonos have hit a home run with design, ease of use, and versatility. 25Hz is audible, but it becomes inaudible any lower than that.Īnyway it's a Sonos SUB - it's pricey. It rolls of quite fast any deeper then 30Hz. And, it seems to do really well at any frequency above 30Hz. I did a little testing to see how deep this can really go. For the first time I could feel the floor moving (something the Play:1's can barely achieve) and listen to music at volumes your neighbors will envy. The treble is restored, and I can pump my system up to extreme volumes without compromise. Toggling the SUB on and off with music playing gave you an easy night and day difference. Why? Well, the SUB takes ALL of the heavy bass work off of the Play:1's. WHEW! Everything sounded clearer, warmer, LOUDER and fuller. When I setup the SUB I listened to some music and the difference. what's the ultimate remedy to the above points? There's no denying that at under half volume, a pair of Play:1's sound really great.īut. This is actually quite audible and I can't help but notice it! So hard hitting parts of the songs you listen to have a lower volume than the parts that are less harsh. For example, playing at high volumes (70% for example) doesn't sound nearly as balanced and natural as when the Play:1 was at 30%.įOURTH.ly, at 100% volume, the speaker dynamically adjusts volume to remove distortion. Thirdly, Sonos needed to find a volume cap at which the bass response needed to be lowered to remove distortion. Sonos have had to roll off the treble a bit to make the speaker sound more natural. This is an important psycho-acoustic principle, because the less bass a speaker has, the more the treble seems more harsh to the listener. Secondly, Sonos sneakily rolled off the treble. Considering it needs to handle parts of vocals too, you want a mid-woofer to perform as accurately as possible! When buying the Play 1 I was seriously impressed at how much bigger it sounded, yet was unaware at the time at what trade-offs had to be made to make it play well WITHOUT the SUB.įirstly, the Play:1 had to roll off the bass steeply at roughly 40Hz, any lower would be too demanding on that little 3.5" woofer. And, as you may or may not know, a single Play:1 has one tweeter and one full range 3.5" woofer, that is expected to handle vocals and demanding bass for its size. I use a stereo Play:1 setup in a fairly small room.
